Lake Huron Medical Center (LHMC) has been designated a provisional level III trauma center by the St. Clair County Medical Control Authority.

Throughout the last 18 months, the hospital has been implementing policies and procedures designed to enhance the care provided to patients in need of Trauma services, as part of the process of seeking designation from the state of Michigan as a Level III Trauma Center, using the American College of Surgeons-Committee On Trauma (ACS-COT) as a guideline for policies and procedures.

LHMC’s level III provisional designation means it has the resources to provide emergency resuscitation, surgery and intensive care to trauma patients. It does not have full availability of specialists, but the hospital can coordinate patient transfers to level II or I facilities, if needed.

“We saw the need for the hospital to offer this additional lifesaving, highly specialized service to the Blue Water area,” said Ken Sanger, chief nursing officer for the hospital. “The efforts displayed by our team towards this trauma program are astounding. LHMC continues to enhance services to best meet the needs of the patients of this community."

The LHMC Trauma team is led by Dr. Karen McFarlane, MD, FACS, FASMBS, Dip. ABOM., Trauma Program Medical Director and Dr. Dawn Morey, DO, Trauma Program Medical Director, Dr. David Kraus, DO, Betty Falecki, BSN, Director of Emergency Services/Trauma Services, Cindy Sebring, BSN, Trauma Coordinator, Courtney Foote, BSN, Trauma Coordinator and Denise Mifflin, Trauma Registrar.

In 2016, Lake Huron Medical Center received the Women’s Choice Award in recognition of being among “America’s Best Hospitals in Emergency Care,” certification from Health Stream for “Excellence in Emergency Care” and earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval® for Hospital Accreditation by demonstrating continuous compliance with its performance standards.
